Weekly coffee - 6th and 7th bean

On the last two Fridays we met in a Cafe as Canary Wharf and talked – as usually – about Java, programming and other interesting things of the IT world. In this post I will write about both occasion.

Weekly topic

  • Behaviour Driven Development – mByHave demo and code review.

I started working on a Behaviour Driven Development tool (for Java) which easily can be integrated to the JUnit and supports the base functionality of JBehave, but this API is much simpler and easy-to-use and does not need special knowledge.

    Currently supported functionality:

    • Annotations: Given, When, Then
    • Pattern matching
    • Story files etc.

Todos to release the version 1.0

    • matching improvement
    • documentation
    • logging
  • Code design
    • Dependency injection on Android
    • Spring for Android
    • MVC on Android
  • Demo of Hailo

Balazs works on this project and he demoed the functionality, both the client and the driver side. If you want to use a cab in London, than try it!

    Android Play Store
    iPhone AppStore
  • Language evolution
    • The weaknesses of the “new” keyword (in Java)
    • The IoC evolution
    • How to resolve Dependencies – problems and difficulties
    • The languages of the future
      • Scala features

Intersession

We held also an intersession on last Sunday (20th of May) where we tried a pair programming technique with 2 mins programming session. After the two minutes everything had to be committed or reverted and only compiling and running code could be in the repository.

Consequences

It would be possible to use this in a real project, but we guess sometimes it does not worth to break down always the really small steps. (even if a real project the time could be raised to 5-8 or even 10 minutes)

We are still not convinced that the TDD as efficient as it is written in many articles. We have not been able yet to work with TDD in every segment of out code.

Next meeting:

On the next week I'll be on holiday. :) Therefore the next meeting will be on 8th of June presumably at Canary Wharf.
